Construction Updates - Meredith Hall South

WEEK OF AUGUST 17TH:

  • It's move-in week! We're ready for students to call Meredith South their new home. 

WEEK OF AUGUST 10TH:

  • Early arrivals have begun! Some students and Residential Assistants (RAs) have moved in to Meredith South!
  • Landscaping is underway outside.
  • All elevators have passed inspection and are up and running.
  • DID YOU KNOW? Boiler Gold Rush (Freshman move-in) begins on Friday!

WEEK OF AUGUST 3RD:

  • Meredith South is almost ready! Finishing touches underway in all areas.
  • The ground floor is still a busy area - work continues on the retail dining spaces as well as the front desk, multi-purpose areas and office spaces.
  • Purdue crews are going through the building with "punch lists" to ensure everything is ready for move-in.
  • DID YOU KNOW: Countdown to move-in is two weeks!!!

WEEK OF JULY 27TH:

  • Work continues in the retail dining space where Qdoba and Panera will be located.
  • Final pieces of furniture will be installed this week.
  • Final painting underway.
  • DID YOU KNOW: Wait until you see the views from Meredith South! They are amazing!

WEEK OF JULY 20TH:

  • Final painting underway in the stairwells.
  • Signage inside the buildings (for example, student room numbers) has begun.
  • Washer and dryers will be installed in the laundry room this week.
  • DID YOU KNOW? There are 41 fire extinguishers in Meredith South!

WEEK OF JULY 13TH:

  • Final painting of interior corridors is ongoing.
  • Crews are preparing elevators for inspection.
  • The construction site trailer is expected to be removed this week... we're getting so close! Three weeks until students move in!
  • DID YOU KNOW? Meredith South has 730 student beds and five apartment beds. 

WEEK OF JULY 6TH:

  • Finishing touches! Wrapping up carpet installation, drywall, painting, etc.
  • Final cleaning underway.
  • Construction fence expected to come down the week of July 27th!
  • DID YOU KNOW? We are about ONE MONTH away from freshman move-in! The countdown to the opening of Meredith South is on!

WEEK OF JUNE 29TH:

  • Painting in the corridors is finished.
  • Polished concrete in the laundry rooms is also finished.
  • Crews are working on placing topsoil around the building.
  • Climate control is up and running!
  • DID YOU KNOW? There are approximately 95 pavers at Meredith South!

WEEK OF JUNE 22ND:

  • Landscapers have mobilized.
  • Ceramic tile installation on the first floor is expected to be completed by next week.
  • Another milestone - part of the construction fence is expected to be removed next week!
  • DID YOU KNOW? The paperwork for construction projects lasts about two months AFTER the project is finished!

WEEK OF JUNE 15TH:

  • Prep work for brick pavers is now complete.
  • Furniture arrives!
  • Elevator inspections are scheduled for this week.
  • Asphalt paving along First Street scheduled for this week, as well.
  • DID YOU KNOW? There will be 2,579 trees and plants put in the landscape around Meredith Hall South!

WEEK OF JUNE 8TH:

  • Carpet tile installation is expected to begin this week.
  • Final cleaning has begun in some areas.
  • Furniture for student rooms will be delivered the week of June 15th.

WEEK OF JUNE 1ST:

  • Masonry (brick work) is complete
  • Drywall on the first floor continues. 
  • Site work continues. Landscaping should begin soon!

WEEK OF MAY 25TH:

  • Exterior facade work continues.
  • Crews are working through punch list items and checking them off.
  • Site work (curbs and gutters) continues. 
  • DID YOU KNOW? There are 394 steps inside Meredith South. Despite both Meredith South and Griffin Hall North being a different building shape and layout, both have around 400 steps each.

WEEK OF MAY 18TH:

  • All brick masonry is complete! This is a big milestone for the project.
  • Metal window panel installation is ongoing.
  • Glass installation on the south side of the building continues.
  • DID YOU KNOW? There are 260 doors in Meredith South!

WEEK OF MAY 11TH:

  • Glass on the first floor is being installed!
  • Site work continues.
  • Work on the interior ground floor continues, as well as the other elevators.
  • DID YOU KNOW? Check out the photo gallery to see the progress of Meredith South as we close to completion.

WEEK OF MAY 4TH:

  • Site work is ongoing (curbs and gutters)
  • Gilbane Co. (builder) has started going through punch list items, which all need to be done before the building is handed over to Purdue.
  • Drywall taping is happening on the first (ground) floor.
  • DID YOU KNOW? It takes about 10 days to go through the process of painting one floor of Meredith South!

WEEK OF APRIL 27TH:

  • Glass will be installed on side stairwells this week.
  • Brick work is expected to take just one day on the bridge connector.
  • Exterior framing to begin soon on the canopy area.
  • DID YOU KNOW? Student furniture is expected to arrive in early May! How exciting!

WEEK OF APRIL 20TH:

  • The buckhoist (outdoor elevator) should be down by now and work where that was will begin.
  • Sitework is on-going. Sitework are things like sidewalks and landscaping that make the who project look less like a construction site and more like a residence hall! 
  • Brick work should be mostly complete, limestone installation is on-going! 
  • DID YOU KNOW? Just because we are not on campus anymore doesn't mean you can't keep an eye on the construction for Meredith! There is a live feed and phots will be updated regularly! Keep up to date and get excited about fall semester! 

WEEK OF APRIL 13TH:

  • Elevator installation is done, inspection scheduled for this week!
  • Exterior brick work is finishing up.
  • Crews have begun to pour concrete outside - look for curbs to be poured this week!
  • DID YOU KNOW: After the elevator is inspected and receives approval for use, a full-time operator will be present throughout the work day (just like in the "olden" days!).

WEEK OF APRIL 6TH:

  • Power will be shut down to due equipment testing this week.
  • The metal roof is being installed.
  • Majority of brick work around the exterior building is complete.
  • DID YOU KNOW: Meredith South is not changing its name. Third Street Suites and Third Street North were renamed Griffin Hall South and Griffin Hall North.

WEEK OF MARCH 30TH:

  • Limestone panels are being installed on the exterior of the building.
  • Temporary heaters will be removed from the site this week as we prepare to shift to permanent power.
  • Brick work is finishing up. The next step will be to clean the bricks off to remove any excess mortar and dirt.
  • DID YOU KNOW: Room layouts and dimensions are posted on the Meredith South main webpage!

WEEK OF MARCH 9TH:

  • Interior painting continues.
  • Elevator work continues.
  • Installation of interior doors has begun. 

WEEK OF MARCH 2ND:

  • The first elevator will be inspected this week, which means crews can start using the elevators very soon!
  • Flooring installation has started on the third floor.
  • Wall-tiling in the single and shared bathrooms is ongoing.
  • DID YOU KNOW: Gilbane has 1,000 items on their pre-punch list, meaning they have 1,000 less things to check off when they go to hand the building over to Purdue! 

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 24TH:

  • Elevator installation continues. Crews hope to "turn on" elevator by the end of the month.
  • Framing and windows are up on the glass connector between one side of the building and the other. The views of campus from here will be beautiful!
  • Partition walls are going up on the first floor.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 17TH:

  • Painting is now up to the 7th Floor!
  • Bathroom tiling is ongoing.
  • Work on the first elevator is progressing.
  • DID YOU KNOW? Most of the limestone used on both Meredith South and Third Street Suites North came from Indiana.

WEEK OF FEBRUARY 3RD:

  • Walls around the showers in community bathrooms are being installed.
  • Tiling has started. The bathrooms are really starting to come together!
  • Painting in student rooms and in public spaces is ongoing.

WEEK OF JANUARY 27TH:

  • The big heating and cooling units have been tied to the roof, which means the permanent HVAC system will be up and running soon!
  • Brick installation on the exterior of the first floor will begin this week. This brick is more detailed than the bricks up higher.
  • The frame work for the big windows is ongoing. It won't be long before the windows are installed!
  • DID YOU KNOW? Each residence hall has a "color palette" for paint, which consists of 4 main colors. This makes it easier to find the correct shade for touch-ups.

WEEK OF JANUARY 21ST:

Welcome back! Construction continued over the winter recess and Meredith South continues to take shape. Construction hours will remain the same going forward, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Happening this week and beyond:

  • Drywall continues to go up in the student rooms. Crews have also begun installing flooring on the second floor. Painting has also started in some rooms.
  • We're also getting ready to install the first elevator. Target date for installation is early February. 
  • Outside, brickwork continues on the northeast side of the building.

WEEK OF DECEMBER 6TH:

  • Brick continues to go up around the western portion of the building.
  • Fireproofing and taping continues inside the building.
  • Construction hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., however, with shorter daylight hours and in consideration for finals week, no exterior work is expected after 5:30 p.m.
  • DID YOU KNOW? Gilbane, the building construction company, has sponsored a veteran family for the holidays. There are containers at the job site where employees will drop off gifts for the family, which includes three children.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 18TH:

  • Elevators were delivered and installation will happen soon!
  • Temporary heat is on inside the building, keeping interior around 50 degrees while work continues during the winter months. These are essentially big heaters blowing warm air throughout the interior site.
  • You'll notice plastic wrap around the building (winter protection). It helps keep the warmth from the temporary heaters inside.
  • DID YOU KNOW? A lot of the plumbing material is PEX (a plastic material using for piping). It's flexible and easier than rigid copper piping. It can be colored red or blue to distinguish between hot and cold water pipes.

WEEK OF NOVEMBER 4TH:

  • Bricklaying continues on the exterior north side of the building.
  • Drywall installation continues inside the building.
  • Doorframe installation has begun.
  • Also inside, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection work is happening. Meredith South is a busy job site!

WEEK OF OCTOBER 21ST:

  • Roofing on the elevator shaft is almost complete.
  • Insulation work has begun!
  • Drywall is being installed and the student rooms are finally coming together!
  • DID YOU KNOW? There are 380,000 bricks on Meredith South!

WEEK OF OCTOBER 14TH:

  • There will be trucks delivering drywall all week (in the mornings), so be on the lookout!
  • The first floor exterior framing is complete, so the building is mostly closed up now.
  • Crews will be washing the bricks on the south side of Meredith South (facing First Street) to remove excess grout.
  • DID YOU KNOW? This job has "commingled" dumpsters which are sorted off site so unused materials can be recycled. It's just another way this job site is following Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards! 

WEEK OF OCTOBER 7TH:

  • Roof and brick work continue.
  • Window testing (pressurize one side, spray water on the other side to test for moisture) complete.
  • Drywall to begin soon!
  • DID YOU KNOW? Around 20 different construction trades are currently working on this building!

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 23RD:

  • Fireproofing is almost done!
  • Roofing has started (prep work)!
  • Brick continues to go up on the exterior of the south side of the building (along First Street).
  • Some drywall has started!

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 16TH:

  • Roofing starts this week! Drywall is expected to begin on or around October 1st!
  • Brick continues to go up on the exterior of building.
  • Meredith South now has permanent power, you'll notice lights are on 24/7 for safety and crime prevention.
  • Construction hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (unless otherwise announced).
  • DID YOU KNOW? The freight elevators at the construction site are pink for breast cancer awareness.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 9TH:

  • OUTSIDE: Fireproofing the ground floor and vapor barrier installation.
  • INSIDE: Mechanical, electrical and plumbing work (should be minimal noise). Also, crews will be putting up metal studs from the 4th floor and up (minimal disturbance to students).
  • DID YOU KNOW? Meredith South will be LEED certified, meaning it will be recognized as a green building!
