Resident assistants and Residential Life staff recently traded duty rounds for the dance floor at the annual Rakosnik Legacy Gala.
The semiformal dance is an opportunity for University Residences to thank outstanding students for their hard work with a night of fun and honor the legacy of alumni Bill and Barbara Rakosnik. Now in its third year, the gala — held at Shively Club at Ross-Ade Stadium — has developed beloved traditions, including a flash mob performed by professional staff.

The gala was established thanks to the generosity of the Rakosniks, who were inspired by the formal dances they enjoyed as students to create an opportunity for future generations to make memories of their own. Bill and Barbara attended their first formal dance in December 1966, a few months after they met. During that time, women’s and men’s residence halls held formal dances throughout the year. Couples would meet and dine at their respective halls before heading to Purdue Memorial Union to dance the night away.
