Move-Out Information for Students & Families

Just like the move-in process, we want to make your move-out process as smooth as possible. In some cases, you must be completely moved out of your room and complete the checkout process prior to noon on the final day of your housing contract. Late stay options may be available at an extra cost and must be approved. Check your Purdue email and direct questions to your hall front desk or resident assistant (RA).

All students must complete the pre-checkout process and either the Departing for Winter Break and Returning in January or Leaving Purdue, West Lafayette Campus for Spring Semester process.

Dining will be closed starting December 21.

If you are leaving for one of the following reasons, you should complete the Contract Release form in the Housing Portal:

  • Co-op Internship
  • Student Teaching
  • Study Abroad
  • Withdrawing from Purdue West Lafayette
  • Military 
  • Graduation
  • Marriage
  • Transferring to Another Purdue Campus
  • Transferring to Another University
  • Medical Reasons

Need to stay after December 21, 2025 but no later than December 22, 2025?

If you need to stay after Sunday, December 21, 2025, at noon, but no later than Monday, December 22, 2025, at noon:

  • Visit the Housing Portal and complete the late stay form.
  • Potential reasons for requesting late stay may include:
    • employed with University Residences
    • athletic participation
    • personal reasons such as flight arrangements and transportation
  • The deadline to complete a request for late stay is December 1, 2025.
  • You may be assessed a $42/day room-only charge for staying late if you live in a traditional residence hall.
  • When departing from your late stay you must complete the steps in either the Departing for Winter Break and Returning in January or Leaving Purdue, West Lafayette Campus for Spring Semester process.

Departing for Winter Break and Returning in January

  • Prior to December 1, you must visit the main office of your assigned residence hall and notify them of your departure. 
  • On or after December 1, you may scan the QR code that is provided by the main office or visit the Housing Portal to check out for Winter Break.

Leaving Purdue West Lafayette Campus for Spring Semester

  • Plan to move out prior to Sunday, December 21, 2025, at noon. Students who are not moved out by December 21 will be charged $42 for the night of December 21 and are not eligible to stay beyond December 22 at noon.
  • Complete the Check Out Form:
    • Pick up the "check out envelope" at your hall's main office.
    • Drop the completed "check out envelope," with the key inside, off at your assigned hall's drop-off location after removing your belongings and cleaning your room.
    • The room must be in the same condition it was when resident moved in.
    • Take a picture of the room and upload it to the Housing Portal.
    • Lost key (not turned in at check out): $75 per lost key to replace the lock.
      • Please note University Residences apartments lost key charges may vary based on location.
    • Residents will be billed for any damages that have occurred as determined by the University Residences team inspection or assessed to the hall community. 

Improper Checkout/Items Left Behind

Please note, you may be charged $42/day room only and/or a $50 improper check-out fee for:

  • failing to properly move out/check out when departing.
  • failing to designate an escort to assist with retrieving your belongings.
  • failing to properly or timely remove all belongings.

FAQs

I need to stay after December 21, 2025, how much does it cost and what do I do?
Students needing to stay after noon on December 21, but no later than December 22 at noon should complete the housing late stay form located on the Housing Portal. Students will be charged $42/day room-only charge for the night of December 21.
I need to stay longer than December 22, how much does it cost and what do I do?

Any student needing to stay after noon on December 22 should plan to complete the Winter Break Housing application located in the Housing Portal. You will be charged a minimum of $609 for room only. This fee is not prorated.

Note: Students living in apartments will not be charged for Winter Break Housing; however, registration is still required. 

Will I lose any unused Dining Dollars?
Dining Dollars will roll over to the spring semester. Any unused Dining Dollars at the end of the academic year will expire.
How will I get my mail?
All mail delivery will be suspended over Winter Break. If you need to have something delivered, you should plan to make alternative arrangements.
I forgot to complete the check out envelope and turn my key in when I checked out, what do I do?
Please contact the main office of your assigned residence hall as soon as possible. Please keep in mind main office hours may be restricted due to reduced staff. If you are unable to reach anyone at the main office of the hall you are assigned, please email the hall at the hall email account. Make arrangements with the main office to return your key if possible. You may be assessed a $50 improper check-out fee and if you are unable to return your key in a timely manner you may be assessed $75 for a lock change.
