Residence Hall Decoration Policy

  1. Holiday decorations within corridors shall be limited to 10% of the surface area of the resident’s door. Holiday decoration on corridors wall shall be limited to 10% of total wall surface area (equivalent to the space of a bulletin board). Doors cannot be wrapped in paper or other flammable material. Posters and whiteboards are not permitted. Community fliers are allowed on designated bulletin boards or posting areas in building hallways. Only door decs are allowed on residence hall/apartment doors. Door Decs are limited to 2 per occupant.  
  2. Decorations shall not obstruct fire alarm devices or the operation of automatic sprinkler heads.
  3. The following types of materials are approved for use in decorations and displays. They can usually be found in local stores.
    1. commercially flame proofed crepe paper
    2. commercially flame proofed pomps (napkin size)
    3. paints
      1. latex base paints
      2. watercolor paints or water mixed powder paints
      3. poster paints
    4. commercially flame proofed fabrics
    5. flame proofed corrugated paper (available in colors)
  4. The following types of materials are strictly prohibited from use as decorations or displays.
    1. garbage bags or plastic drop tarps
    2. baled or loose hay, straw or cornstalks
    3. split bamboo
    4. cane poles
    5. pasteboard walls or partitions
    6. paper napkins, toilet tissue, paper tissue or other light, highly combustible paper products
  5. No decorations or displays may be placed so that it in any way obstructs an exit.
  6. No items may be affixed or block the windows for fire safety purposes. Items can be placed on the sill.
  7. Haunted houses or mazes are not permitted.
  8. Live Christmas trees are not permitted.
  9. Corridor lighting must not be reduced to the point that emergency exits cannot be identified from a resident’s room. Residents must be able to see the exit signs.
  10. Temporary wooden walls and partitions are not permitted.
  11. Electrical Cords are not permitted under doors or cannot be daisy chained together.
  12. Fireworks and/or explosive devices may not be used as decoration.
  13. Holiday lights shall not crisscross the corridor. Lights shall be positioned /fixed so not to create a low hanging obstruction.
  14. Holiday lights shall be listed through a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as UL,CSA, ETL. Light strands are not to be modified in any way.
  15. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the number of light strands that can be connected together.
  16. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
  17. No candles or open flames devices are allowed.
