College is a time of tremendous social and intellectual growth, where lifelong memories and friendships are cemented. Within these foundational experiences are moments of struggle. Cramming for exams. Doubting oneself after receiving a failing grade on an assignment. Navigating a tricky situation with a roommate.
During these times of struggle, an act of kindness can go a long way to helping a student overcome challenges. Through University Residences’ Walk Alongside a Boilermaker program, Purdue alumni have the opportunity to support Purdue students during challenging situations.
Through this program, alumni can provide notes of encouragement to include in resource bags that are hand-delivered to students in need. Resource bags include sensory-based grounding techniques to encourage well-being. A note from alumni and delivery from staff provide a personal touch so the student in need knows they are supported.
Notes can include pieces of wisdom, advice and information that can be of general assistance to students. Hearing from alumni who have slept in the same halls, attended the same lectures and walked the same campus can help show students a path out of their situation. Together, we can help students on their journey to creating a positive impact in workplaces and communities.
Alumni interested in submitting a note of encouragement or learning more about Walk Alongside a Boilermaker can visit the initiative’s website. Additional questions about the program can be directed to campusliving@purdue.edu.
